24 MIDWEEK NOVEMBER 24, 2021
    Golden Pineapple Stays In Vegas
Hundreds of fans traveled across the ocean and desert to attend the fifth annual Ninth Island Showdown Nov. 13 between the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels and the University of Ha- wai‘i Rainbow Warriors.
With the first UH vs. UNLV game dating back to 1970, this long-standing rivalry is about more than just the game and that gold- en pineapple trophy. With Las Vegas having the largest population of former Hawai‘i residents, there was a sea of green showing support for their team before and after the big game — as well as support for those UNLV football players with Hawai‘i ties.

Boyd Gaming was a big part of the football celebration, too. The California Hotel & Casi- no is not only the main sponsor of The Island Showdown, but it also hosts a special event during the Vegas-based games.
While not the first game played in UNLV territory, this was the first game for the ’Bows played inside of Allegiant Stadium, which is now the home field for the UNLV Rebels, along with the Las Vegas Raiders. The ener- gy and excitement did not go unnoticed with fans remaining cheerful and supportive of their team. While the Rebels took back the Ninth Island Showdown trophy to Vegas, the love and support from the UH fans will re- main in Hawai‘i.

This was out first year attending the entire event from tailgate to game, and while we had hoped for a Rainbow Warriors win, the overall experience was amazing!

During the Ninth Island Showdown, for ex- ample, the Boyd Gaming team hosted a tail- gate consisting of quite the gameday spread of food, including local favorites along with traditional tailgate cuisine. Local music from a DJ, as well as a performance by the Univer- sity of Hawai‘i Band entertained guests.
We’ll get them next year!
