hen Amos Kotomori was a student at Roy- al Elementary School (fun fact: he was named after the founder, Amos Cooke),
his mother would make all of his clothes.
“She hand-printed her fabrics with stencils (and) patched and embroidered fabrics for textures,” he says. “I didn’t realize how special it was then. I appreciate
her more now.”
This may very well have sparked Kotomori’s lifelong love for fashion, which has led him to travel around the world, including Thailand, Bali, Paris and Italy. Lately, though, Kotomori has been spending time in the islands.

“One of the blessings of COVID is that I’ve been home in Hawai‘i for nearly two years. COVID has taught me to be in the

moment. I look forward to each wak- moment.”

While he’s here, Kotomori wants to give back, which is why his up- coming women’s collection (his first in 15 years) — available at Saks Fifth Avenue for a limit-
ed time — benefits National Kidney Foundation, Hawaiian Humane Society, Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children and RO Foundation.

“The concept of this collec- tion is using my silk scarves and creating fashion in the old haute couture style — hand rolled, no cutting of fabric (woven fabric is very precious and the gar- ment was produced with pleat- ing and folds),” he explains.
“(It) was created for fearless women who are comfortable in their own skin. I created jewelry to accent her vibra- tion.”
