By Damien Beri, president of The Coral Conservancy
The Coral Conservancy, a nonprof- it founded in Hawai‘i in 2020, is working to create a training platform, which will enable residents to engage in “community coral restoration events.”
move coral from the environment, will cost less than $100 per coral and will not come at the expense of taxpayers.
Thousands of rare and endemic Ha- waiian corals are trampled and killed each year by tourists, yet there remains no stable platform, agency or methods to save these creatures.
Our greatest challenge is eliminating the mindset that only trained scientists can save coral in Hawai‘i. What we need are community members to register for our Volunteer Coral Restoration Train- ing. There is currently no community coral restoration program in Hawai‘i; thus, we will be paving the way for new and radical environmental conservation strategies. This will give future genera- tions the necessary tools to combat coral reef destruction.
Our goal is to offer training and cer- tification to any Hawai‘i resident who wants to learn about and conduct vol- unteer community coral restoration. Our state has an exceptionally large commu- nity of experienced marine recreational- ists. Most of this community cares about coral, are great swimmers, and would enjoy saving coral that break and die on their respective reefs.
The Coral Conservancy invites the community to take part in restoration efforts. PHOTOS COURTESY THE CORAL CONSERVANCY
conducted by the state is over $3,000 per coral colony, and each of the coral grown had to have some source amount taken from the wild to seed the colony. That money comes out of taxpayers’ wallets. Our methods will never re-
We are about to begin our first pilot project and are looking to bring on vol- unteers to help. Learn more by email- ing damienberi@thecoralconservancy. org, calling 917-543-2164 or finding the nonprofit on Instagram (@thecoralcon- servancy).
