is already pouring out a lot of good throughout the state via art, the company wants to do more, specifically with youth.
“All prevention murals have a youth component,” states Nishimura. “It’s very important that the youth take ownership of the mural as well as the message, having them participate ensures that connection.”
“We are developing large scale programs directed for the youth and harnessing their creativity to develop peda- gogical approaches through visual or performance based artforms,” explains Nishimu- ra. “We are also focusing on cultivating the youth to sus- tain and perpetuate Keep It Flowing models for decades to come.”
Since its inception in 2014, Keep It Flowing has made more than 30 prevention murals statewide, includ- ing a substance abuse mural at Makakilo Elementary. Nishimura shares the com- pany has “received mayoral proclamations from all four counties” and was given “special recognition from the governor” for its services within the community.
While the company has big plans for the future, it has a lot going on in the present, too. It’s currently working on projects based in the Waipa- hu area, developing a mural for Kapolei High School, preparing to do its first men- tal health and wellness mural later this year, and planning to do a Hawaiiana mural in Nānākuli next year.
