or state Sen. Bennette Misalucha, serving her community is like second nature. That’s why she created the
Community Hero Awards — made possi- ble thanks to a collaboration with nonprofit Kanu Hawai‘i — which shines a spotlight on the often unsung neighbors who make Pearl City, ‘Aiea and beyond a better place. And this year’s winners, she says, couldn’t be more deserving of the honor.
“We have these people who do this not be- cause they want to win an award but because it comes from an authentic place,” says Mis- alucha. “It comes because they are wanting to give back to their community, wanting to make a difference, and I think that type of at- titude and mindset should be recognized and put forth in the light.”
This year, Larry Veray was the Pearl City award recipient, while Karen Higa won for ‘Aiea.
For his part, Veray has been involved with the Pearl City Neighborhood Board for many years, serving as chair for the last 10. Resi-
