hen loved ones are put to their fi- nal rest, their ‘ohana want them to be in a well taken care of, peace-
ful place — one that family and friends can visit from time to time to pay their respects. Sunset Memorial Park may have once been that place of refuge in the past, but that is no longer the case as it has become notorious for homeless encampments, sinking graves and crumbling crypts.
Additionally, the Pearl City cemetery has developed so many overgrown weeds and un- kempt, tall grass that it makes it difficult for residents to even find their loved one’s plots.
“There are still families here trying to find their gravesites because they’ve collapsed and been covered over, so it’s so important that we help them out,” states Larry Veray chair of the Pearl City Neighborhood Board.
Something resonated with Leeward O‘ahu resident Ryan Pugal when he saw the state of the cemetery on the news.
