“We encourage senior living facilities, churches, schools, businesses and clubs on all the islands to organize a preliminary con- test and help to recruit se- niors to participate,” states Justin George, director of development for Alzhei- mer’s Association Hawai‘i.
Meanwhile, the concept for the competition came from 16-year-old ‘Iolani School junior Riley Regan, who, along with his par- ents, is leading the event’s organization efforts.
Two winners from each category will advance to the final round in July for a chance to win a pair of round trip plane tickets.
For sponsorship and prize donation information, email the Regan family at yoshio.regan@gmail.com.
There will be three age groups (60-69 years old, 70-79 years old, and age 80 and older), and preliminary spelling bees will be held in May and June in-person
“Research shows that older adults who view themselves as lifelong learners tend to have sharp- er cognitive skills. Prepar- ing for a spelling competi- tion can hone those skills,” states Regan.
