Program Steers Students In The Right Direction To Reach Their Destination

ʻwhat was I doing?’ Mike Scully pushed me and re- minded me that I could do this, just stay focused and remember how proud I’m going to make my fami- ly. When I got frustrated, Mike and my classmates would push me to try the maneuver again and again. I got back from my road test, heard that I passed and cried; I couldn’t wait to tell my family, Mike and the guys. I hugged Mike so hard

engine speed with the road speed of the vehicle,” Scul- ly says. “It requires rhythm, timing and synchronization. One of the challenges is to teach students to drive the vehicle like it needs to be driven, while also maintain- ing the level of awareness and safety of operating a large commercial vehicle rather than their car. We offer Class A and Class B training, and the other challenge that students face is finding the time to study the other mod- ules after we introduce them outside of class time. This facilitates more training time for behind-the-wheel parking and driving practice.
“We have had so many students go through the pro- gram with incredible person- al stories,” adds Scully, who credits graduates including Ray Flores-Santiago and Tani Kahalepuna who have come back to teach in the program after gaining pro- fessional experience. “Sin- gle moms on welfare or moms who put their life on hold while they raised their families, ex-convicts, peo- ple who lost their jobs be- cause of the pandemic and students who want to learn a profession. We have had

While the commercial motor vehicle program has been in existence for quite some time, Scully explains that it underwent a curric- ulum revision three years ago when he got involved. The veteran educator of 16- plus years created a “mod- ular based curriculum with a learner-centered environ- ment” that correlates with
According to Scully, stu- dents begin training on a Virage VS 600 simulator where they learn the disci- plines required to drive large commercial vehicles with non-synchromesh transmis- sions.

“I am so proud of Dave- lynn and it was great seeing her tap into her strength and believe in herself,” Scully says. “She drives profession- ally for Maunalei Trucking Inc. We instructors become emotionally invested in our students’ success. When they successfully take a road test, they receive a white paper from the examiner to go and get their license. When they walk up to us with that pa- per in their hand, believe me, there have been many memo- rable hugs and tears of joy.”
