Kamauu adds that Pearl- ridge was chosen as an excellent site to place the machines because it caters to the local community and military members.

Instead, the intent of the project is to raise awareness of needs, invite the public to give and serve, and amplify community engagement.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has been working behind the scenes with charitable organizations for a long time to provide assistance in Ha- wai‘i — including through- out the pandemic, Kamauu emphasizes.

“That’s the agreement we have with all the nonprofits. We want that whatever an individual purchases from the Giving Machine, that item is going to be delivered by the nonprofit organization to a recipient,” explains the church’s Hawai‘i communi- cations director H. Wailana Kamauu Jr.
When people put their card in the machine, make a purchase and take their card out, they will receive a print- ed tax-deductible receipt, Kamauu says.
for a site in Manhattan, New York City, didn’t go through, that freed up two machines for the state — which were located at Polynesian Cul- tural Center in Lā‘ie for the 2019 campaign.
So, the Giving Machines are not an anomaly, but an added way that the church can bring its humanitarian efforts directly to communi- ties, he says.
The Giving Machine ef- fort launched back in 2017 in large metropolitan areas across the country, and it ex- panded globally 2018-19.
Kamauu remembers that he had only two weeks to mobilize the effort and get it running.
Another way the church connects both organizations and volunteers to do good things is through its website justserve.org. Utilizing that website, individuals can go online to get email notifi- cations when service proj- ects are posted in their area. Meanwhile, nonprofits can get in touch with a JustServe representative in their neigh- borhood to start looking for volunteers needed to make a difference.

“The next thing I did, I stored it (the machines) on O‘ahu, so, it didn’t go back to Salt Lake City (headquar- ters). And then COVID hit, so nobody moved. So, I just kept it and hung onto it,” Ka- mauu recalls.
