UH-Mānoa Building Is Renamed For ‘First Lady Of Limu’
The renaming effort began

  The life sciences building at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is being renamed for “the First Lady of Limu.”

  The three-story, state-of- the-art, 70,000-square-foot building, which opened in 2020, will officially be known as the Isabella Aio- na Abbott Life Sciences Building.
The UH board of regents voted unanimously to ap- prove the renaming at its Jan. 19 meeting, following a groundswell of support from the campus community.
The late UH ethnobotany professor and Native Hawai- ian paved the way for inte- grating traditional Native Hawaiian customs and prac- tices into Western science. She was also instrumental in establishing the school’s ethnobotany program, which studies the interaction be- tween humans and plants.
