Masaki School Of Music Continues To Inspire Students To Achieve Excellence

Among them is Sean Kennard, who Ellen would teach for hours at all times of the day and night, and who became the first piano stu- dent from Hawai‘i to attend Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, later attending The Juilliard School and be- coming a concert pianist.

The school’s address may be new, but its purpose re- mains the same: to help students reach a level of mu- sical artistry and technical perfection they may never have thought possible. This mission was instilled in the school when it was founded by Ellen in 1953.
“Even if students have not gone on to have a musical career, they carry with them an appreciation for hav- ing had the good fortune to study music,” Nancy states.
“My mother was devot- ed to her students,” Nancy recalls. “She believed every student had a musical abili- ty and used every technique, strategy, educational theory and psychological ploy at her disposal to enhance their de- velopment and growth.”
Although Ellen died in 2009 after battling gastric cancer, her legacy lives on through the school and her students. In fact, some for- mer students are now teach- ers at the school, including
