 Anthropology professor Miriam Stark was picked to fill one of three archaeolo- gist positions on the commit- tee, which is overseen by the State Department.
Stark is an anthropology professor in UH’s College of Social Sciences. She has di- rected UH-Mānoa’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies since 2018 and is currently a Fulbright senior specialist and honorary research asso- ciate with University of Syd- ney in Australia.
It is offering Hawai‘i high school seniors a min- imum $10,000 annual tui- tion scholarship (renewable for three additional years). To be eligible for the Guar- anteed Scholarship and Admission Program, stu- dents must be enrolled in an accredited Hawai‘i high school, have an anticipat- ed high school graduation date of 2023, a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 through the end of their junior year and no dis- ciplinary violations.
In addition, students ad- mitted into the GSAP pro- gram will receive an admis- sion decision no later than Dec. 31, a $500 visit grant to attend a campus tour or pre- view a program, priority reg- istration for fall 2023 class- es, early access to housing applications, and more.
Once appointed, Stark will help advise the president on appropriate U.S. action in response to state requests for help protecting cultural her- itage; make recommenda- tions on issues that prevent stolen cultural objects from being illegally trafficked in the U.S.; and help preserve artifacts in a legal manner for scientific, educational and cultural purposes.

She has fieldwork expe- rience in North America, the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia, and has
published more than 100 articles and chapters on Southeast Asian and North American archaeology. Important themes in her
research include urbaniza- tion, ceramic production and distribution and pow- er relations in premodern Cambodia.

 President Joe Biden has announced his intent to ap- point a University of Ha- wai‘i at Mānoa professor to the U.S. Cultural Property Advisory Committee.
“I am so honored to be ap- pointed to the Cultural Prop- erty Advisory Committee, which serves an essential role in the country’s efforts to protect cultural heritage,” states Stark, adding that her long-term work in Cambo- dia has taught her the impor- tance of protecting cultural heritage.
