   Keiki Wanted For Local Study
University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center was recent- ly awarded $3.1 million to study child obesity and its links to disease. Hawai‘i children age 5 and younger — including those in East O‘ahu — are invited to take part in the study called Shape Up! Keiki, which is led by UH Cancer Center researcher John Shepherd.
Funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development will be used to create advanced body-shape models using 3D scans. The scans will provide a detailed description at how body shape and composition are related to obesity risk factors, such as high choles- terol, high blood pressure, and cancer among children in Hawai‘i and the Pacific.

“The inclusion of our di- verse population in Hawai‘i for this specific study will help us to more fully under- stand the extent of health inequalities and the mech- anisms in which to address them,” Shepherd states.
