ill Fong Piano Studio recently celebrat- ed its 35th anniversary, as well as its third year at its Hawai‘i Kai location.
When Fong and her siblings were young, her parents purchased a Steinway grand pi- ano for them. It was an expensive instru- ment and Fong remembers her mom telling them, “Now you’re all taking piano class- es and none of you can quit!” She laughs. “And we don’t regret it one bit.”
Her first experience in piano classes was at 6 years old at a Catholic school, learn- ing from the stereotypically strict nun with the wooden ruler. Although Fong loved the piano, she didn’t appreciate the teaching approach, so her parents moved her to a different studio.
“It was there that I received a solid music foundation and learned work ethic, concen- tration, commitment and gained confidence, which are just some of the positive attributes developed through learning the piano that carry into all areas of life,” she says.
