A loha surfers and beachgoers, Well, we’ve officially fin- ished the summer of 2022.
gratulations also to the North Shore’s big wave warrior Chris Owens, who took fifth place at 62 years young. Also, my buddy and Surf News Network reporter Blair Thorndike, age 59, came in at a respectable 12th. Huge kudos to all our paddleboarders.
 Overall, it was epic!
The focus will now turn toward the
waves of fall season. This means both town and country swells — more and more for country, less and less for town.
The Duke’s Waikīkī Ocean Mile Swim is always fun to witness. There are so many swimmers with energetic entry into the water.
The season is opposite ours in the land Down Under. Australia and New Zealand will be going from winter into spring while we go from summer to fall. The storms that bring our southern surf decrease Down Under and increase for the North Pacific.
Winning top honors from the Kamehameha Swim Club with a crazy fast time of 15:50 was Knut Robinson from Kailua. This 17-year-old teenag- er is going places and fast. The quick- est in the elder category (ages 50-54), just seven seconds behind Robinson, was Stone Miller. The fastest female of the bunch was Leila Nasrallah from Honolulu with a time of 17:32. This 5-foot, 8-inch, 16-year-old phenom is writing her own ticket to college and a lifetime of success. Nasrallah also surfs very well, dives and hangs out at the beach with friends.

Recently, we’ve had lot of small surf for all shores, but if it’s rideable, it’s doable.

swell came in on day one and kept go- ing and going, like the Energizer Bunny. With more than 15 events, this iconic ocean festival is truly special.
Sometimes our satisfaction comes from the simple act of immersion into our ocean playground, talking story with old and new friends while waiting for sets, breathing the fresh air and feeling the trades and water under the hot Ha- waiian sun. Even an hour can work won- ders for the heart, mind and soul, leaving you feeling more relaxed, free and con- tent — and I’ll throw in younger.
Following are a few winners and a few competitions. In the Duke’s Waikīkī Pad- dleboard and Stand Up Paddleboarding Race, Heath Hemmings, age 52, from Kailua, the son of the legendary surfer Fred Hemmings, took first place in the overall finishers’ list. I have to send con-
Congrats to each and everyone who joined in the fun. You know Duke is smiling down on us.
The grand finale of the summer was, of course, the Duke’s Oceanfest. It scored amazing waves for pretty much all eight days. The epic south-southwest
