Duke’s Oceanfest Shares The Meaning Of Aloha
We actually kicked off the summer surf season early for big waves in May and have been getting some “whoa”-level episodes ev- ery month. Let’s hope Au- gust isn’t a party pooper. So far, the forecast isn’t good through the first half of the month. Note that the summer surf season can last through September and even span into October.
The ranking or tier of the U.S. Open is the Challenger Series and this is event No. 4 — the mid-point. Each of these eight CS contests are worth 10,000 points and help the world’s up and coming best go against the current world’s best on the No. 1 tier World Championship Tour.
er’s brand and this is one of his favorite spots — Teahu- po’o or Chopes — home of some of the heaviest waves on earth.
Speaking of surf, Duke’s Oceanfest is back. That’s the mantra as we celebrate 20 years. Talk about a welcome anniversary for Waikīkī’s premier ocean sports festival.
amazing Oceanfest is that it supports the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. Proceeds from the event help fund its scholarships and grants for Hawai‘i residents and nonprofits competing in “Duke-related” sports.
On the world tour stage, we’re at Huntington Beach for the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing. They’ve had plenty swells so far from Hurricane Frank.

For Duke, it clearly is all about aloha, giving back to others, staying humble and never giving up the dream. I always share Duke’s creed — and this week is no ex- ception. Here it is: “In Ha- wai‘i we greet friends, loved ones and strangers with alo- ha, which means with love.
The legendary Duke Kahanamoku is pictured here with open arms.

Can you imagine if Slater won one more at 50 years young? I can, because he won Pipe this year in Janu- ary. The Tahiti event trials took place Aug. 5-7 and I will post everything for you on snnhawaii.com.
Aloha is the key word to the universal spirit of real hospi- tality, which makes Hawai‘i renowned as the world’s cen- ter of understanding and fel-
lowship. Try meeting or leav- ing people with aloha. You’ll be surprised by their reaction. I believe it and it is my creed. Aloha to you.”

It’s all happening Aug. 20- 28. The event had a two-year pandemic pause, but now it’s time to pay tribute to Duke Kahanamoku.
The father of modern-day surfing would love how Ha- wai‘i comes together in the spirit of aloha with fun ocean and beach competitions. It all goes down during the week of Duke’s birthday (Aug. 24). He was born in 1890, so that would make the timeless leg- end 132 this year.
