University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges are of- fering short-term job train- ingsthroughitsHanaCareer Pathways program. The free training and employment pro- gram was set up to serve un- employed or underemployed Hawai‘i residents — includ- ing those in East O‘ahu. More than $2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education is available for tu- ition this year.

The program prepares stu- dents to apply for registered apprenticeships and related degree programs, and also connects them with work- based learning opportunities such as guaranteed inter- views with local employers and paid internships.
“I joined the program to gain access to the work- force while I further my education, and I was able to land an entry level position working in the field,” states Mare Kitabayashi, a recent graduate from the phlebot- omy technician program at KCC.

Kapi‘olani Community College is offering phlebot- omy training, which will prepare students to obtain specimens from health care clients for the purpose of laboratory testing. Trainees will learn to collect and pro- cess blood samples, and oth- er body fluids, in a safe and accurate manner.
