Kalani Grad Hitting The Right Notes

ven as a youngster, Shayn Toothman was fascinated with sounds and often imitated cars, animals and music.
After receiving a toy piano and xylophone at around age 3, Toothman began taking pi- ano lessons, and during that period, “loved playing video games and watching mov- ies, and I very distinctly remember spend- ing hours of my day pressing my ear to the speakers of my Game Boy, humming along to the music and trying to ‘noodle’ on the pi- ano.”
Toothman enrolled in the band program at Kaimukī Middle School and began play- ing percussion, and that slowly led to the Kaimukī’s resident’s enrollment in the Ha- wai‘i Youth Symphony and O‘ahu Band Di- rectors Association’s Select Bands.
While attending Kalani High School, Toothman realized the lifelong impact music had made.
