Small then pursued a ca- reer in educational admin- istration, becoming a vice principal at Kapālama Ele- mentary School. She became principal of Liholiho Ele- mentary School in 1994, and during her 27 years there, she created a community of caring, competent and cre- ative learners.
“Liholiho is a special place. We are ‘ohana. We focus on working together and creating a family. My career has brought me from the poverty in areas of LA to the low-income areas in Honolulu, and it is a priv- ilege to work with every single child, including my staff. I have worked with three generations of teach- ing staff, and I am extreme- ly proud of them.”
