Hawaiian Monk Seal Kekoa’s New Home Is At Sea Life Park
After a decade at the heart of groundbreaking research in California, Hawaiian monk seal KE18 has returned to Hawai‘i to live at Sea Life Park. Also known as Kekoa (“the warrior” in Hawaiian), the seal will continue to be an educational ambassador for his kind while at his new home in East O‘ahu.
Sea Life Park had a tra- ditional Hawaiian blessing, led by kahu Kalani Kali- ma to welcome Kekoa to his new habitat at the park. During the ceremony, Sea Life Park general manag- er Valerie King, along with partners that have been key throughout Kekoa’s journey — NOAA Regional Marine Mammal Response Program coordinator David Schofield and Sea Life Park veterinar- ian assistant Beau Richter — gave welcome remarks to guests.
Both Kalima and Richter are familiar with the monk
in hearing tests both un- derwater and on land, that may one day help to protect future generations of monk seals.
