Fong also performs biop-

It is the white growth that can be seen in people who are out in the sun often. The extra UV exposure can also speed up the formation of cataracts. Whether it’s surfer’s eye, droopy eyelids or a even rou- tine eye exam, Fong is eager to assist.
With regard to the block- age of dacryocystorhinos- tomies, she says that this procedure is performed for nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO).
In addition to the expan- sion of those oculoplastic services, Fong is also trained in cosmetic procedures and treatments such as Botox and facial fillers.
“Oftentimes, patients won’t know their vision is affected until they get it checked — such as when renewing their driver’s license. The more serious eye conditions that should be monitored are glau- coma and diabetes.”
July is UV Safety Aware- ness Month, and Fong of- fers some very clear advice: “Please do not stare directly into the sun!
“My favorite Eastside pas- times are surfing, hiking and eating. It’s been fun learning and getting familiar with the Eastside surf breaks. My hus- band and I also enjoy trying

sion of offerings, Fong still provides general services as well, such as routine eye ex- ams, glasses and contact lens prescriptions, and glaucoma and diabetic eye exams. She also does cataract evaluations and surgeries.
She advises that diabet- ics should get annual eye exams. Likewise, for glau- coma, which is a condition that tends to start off as as- ymptomatic and can lead to peripheral vision loss.
“As corny as it sounds, I feel honored being able to serve the East O‘ahu commu- nity,” says the Punahou grad.
“It’s important to address issues, as droopy eyelids may actually block a patients’ pe- ripheral vision — superior and side views. This obvi- ously can be bothersome and even dangerous. For exam- ple, when driving and chang- ing lanes,” Fong explains.
“It’s hard to describe what that means, but (as a) rule of thumb, if a lesion all of a sud- den pops up, if one you’ve always had starts to change in size or color, or if it starts to become symptomatic, — itchy, dry or bleeding — you should have it evaluated. If ever in doubt, come in for an evaluation.”
“The majority of cataracts are slow and progressing,” she explains.
“If untreated, glaucoma can progress to tunnel vision and complete vision loss.”
Fong, whose husband grew up in East O‘ahu, al- ways knew that she wanted to return to Hawai‘i.
“I often describe the ‘Āina Haina Eye Center as the ‘neighborhood eye clinic,’ and it is very much that. I often see generations of pa- tients, from grandchildren to grandparents, and I love catching up with them and their lives. Living on the Eastside means I get to serve my neighbors and friends.”
