he public is invited to attend the 95th anniversary celebration of Waialua Public Library from 9 a.m.
to 11 a.m. Sept. 24 on the library’s front lawn at 67-068 Kealohanui St.
According to Hawai‘i State Public Li- brary System officials, in 1927, the Waia- lua Public Library opened as the Waialua Community Station and was located in Waialua Sugar Plantation’s office.
Books were cared for and circulated by a Waialua High School student who was paid $10 a month by the State Li- brary of Hawai‘i. By 1936, the station was large enough to become a branch li- brary and was moved into the back of the old Waialua Post Office. In 1951, ground was broken for the new Waialua Public Library currently serving the public — with two improvements in 1975, when an 840-square-foot addition was constructed and air conditioning was installed.
