This June, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation for gender equity champi- oned by Congresswoman Patsy Mink. Passed on June 23, 1972, Title IX trans- formed our schools and universities throughout the country by prohibiting ed- ucational institutions from receiving federal funds if they discriminated on the basis of sex in admissions, recruitment, financial aid, housing or athletics. To honor Mink’s profound leg- acy, Congress later renamed Title IX as the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in
Education Act. In striving to further the profound work of Congresswoman Mink, I have been proud to have secured $7 million in ap- propriations for the Mililani High School girls softball program with soon-to-be- built soccer field turf, locker rooms and other improve- ments on surrounding fa- cilities. Changes like these are dedicated to furthering Title IX equity work and the legacy of Congresswoman Mink in pursuit of gender equality.
