schools across the islands. Since 1964, the nonprofit has advanced its mission of de- veloping youth to their fullest potential through orchestral music, offering numerous, di- verse programs.
H awai‘i Youth Sym- phony — including three Mililani High School stu- dents and one from Mililani Middle — will present its annual gala, He Makana O Nā Mele: The Gift of Mu- sic. It will be a one-hour televised and streamed spe- cial at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 on Ha- wai‘i News Now K5.
Meanwhile, Zoe, a 10th grader at Mililani High, ex- plains, “Hawai‘i Youth Sym- phony has not only helped me improve musically, but has also been a way for me to meet new people. Our per- formance for He Makana O Nā Mele felt uplifting and positive because it was the first time we were able to play together as a group.”
The gala will also be avail- able to stream via hawaiin- ewsnow.com and presented in Japanese via the HI Now Japan streaming player at ha- waiinewsnow.com/hinow/ja- pan. In addition to the perfor- mances, interview segments with community supporters, students, alumni, faculty and board members — including Shimabukuro — will illumi- nate the importance of music education and how HYS is where music begins for many young people.
From the grounds of the event, HYS students from across the state are featured performers in the gala, which had its premiere on Dec. 7.
Students from Mililani schools will be among those performing in the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony annual gala.

while sharing the joy of music with them. I hope that our love for music reaches those who are watching and that they, too, will be able to appreciate music as much as we do.”
