   School To Get New Facilities
Kanoelani Elementary School in Waipi‘o is slated to receive a $7 million cafeteria renovation and expansion as well as an adjacent outdoor pavilion. Facilities will be designed by WhiteSpace Ar- chitects.
Constructed in the 1980s, the current cafeteria was built to accommodate far fewer students than needed today. Only 260 students at a time were able to sit at tables during lunch or activ- ities prior to the coronavirus pandemic. The school now has nearly 750 students from pre-kindergarten to grade six, in addition to a teaching and administrative staff of about 85.
flexibility with scheduling educational lessons and ac- tivities with the upgrade. In addition, the school will have expanded time to uti- lize the cafeteria for other non-meal activities.
“Improving the learning experience for our students at Kanoelani is always our priority,” states school prin- cipal Stacie Kunihisa. “The cafeteria expansion and out- door pavilion will give us the opportunity to enhance our students’ learning in the classroom, and to create more meaningful learning opportunities throughout the day by utilizing these new spaces.”
Given the size of today’s student body, Kanoelani has three separate lunch periods. The expanded and renovat- ed cafeteria will accommo- date all students in only two lunch periods, allowing the students to eat at midday. Right now, students start eating as early as 10:30 a.m.
The outdoor pavilion will be a nearby, covered space that will allow the whole school to gather comfortably together. It will be open-air and designed to take ad- vantage of natural breezes on three sides, providing ventilation. The space will also be large enough to be used for outside activities. WhiteSpace Architects hopes to break ground in early 2023. Construction is estimated to take approxi- mately nine months, with a possible opening early in the 2023-24 academic year.
