Halawa Xeriscape Garden hosts a couple of workshops March 28 to add flair to your home gardens while saving water.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the garden’s pavilion, learn how to create an “unthirsty oasis” by incorporating succulent plants into your garden. Learn from gardeners Brian and Mhel Cyr as they discuss the basics of growing succulents, including introduction to different types of succulents, containers, potting mixes, pest control and more.

Each participant will propagate a succulent plant and take it home with them.

Low-maintenance, xeric (low-moisture) landscapes are attainable, thanks to an educational workshop at the garden’s Green Lanai from 10:30 a.m. to noon. According to the garden, there are seven basic steps to creating a xeriscape garden, and during the workshop you will learn about all of them: crucial planning and design, importance of limited turf areas, efficient irrigation, soil improvements, importance of mulch and utilizing it properly, and more.

Cost is $5, and some Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden members get in free. Advanced registration for both workshops is required. Call 748-5363 or send an email to workshops@hbws.org.
