‘Walk’ At Ko Olina Helps Fund Nonprofit

Returning for the 17th year, Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii will host its Walk in the Country benefit at 5 p.m. Aug. 17 at Lanikuhonua at Ko Olina.

The event raises money for BGCH while also celebrating club members and alumni.

“The goal of Walk in the Country is to help BGCH continue to serve its youths and provide them with quality services and programs that every child can afford,” said BGCH marketing specialist Jennifer Freas. “We aim to develop and build great futures for our Islands’ keiki by providing them a safe place to learn and grow, dedicated and caring mentorships, and evidence-based programming in a variety of areas.”

Taking place outdoors with the ocean as a backdrop, the fundraiser is designed to cultivate a casual atmosphere, even as it features high-quality food and wine.

“The concept was conceived by two board members who wanted an alternative to most other fundraisers that typically are held in ballrooms,” Freas explained. “They wanted an outdoor, casual, backyard-style event where guests can wear aloha shirts and slippers.”

Food stations include Phuket Thai, a poke bar and desserts from Roy’s Restaurant. Pomaikai Ballrooms will cater a luau-style feast, while The Cellar Rats also have wine tastings and a wine auction.

The real highlight, however is BGCH itself.

“Guests are there to celebrate the Clubhouses, their members and alumni who prove that BGCH truly builds great futures for local youths,” Freas said. “Members from each Clubhouse will be there to greet and talk story with guests. It’s an opportunity for guests to see what BGCH offers as well as to see old friends and enjoy new company.”

A Walk in the Country also will feature a silent auction, with items that include a Hawaiian Island Creations longboard, zip-line adventures, a vacation to New Zealand, a ski condo in British Columbia, a cabin in California and trip packages to neighbor islands.

All proceeds will benefit BGCH, which serves more than 14,000 youths annually. Funds will go toward the organization’s various clubhouses and programs.

Tickets are $400 per person, and corporate tables also are available..
