Waimea Valley Reopens Early

Waimea Valley reopened Jan. 22, ahead of schedule, after two weeks of maintenance work.

Rock scaling was the focus of the safety measures, both at the front entrance and the still-to-be completed waterfall area. Swimming is not allowed at the waterfall until Feb. 7, the estimated date of completion there.

According to park executive director Richard Pezzulo, Waimea Valley also has “a fresh new look” as a result of painting and minor repairs to bridges and other facilities.

Paths were re-graveled, and workers repaved sections of the road and repaired rock edgings of the gardens.

New activities come with the new look. Family Sunday is set for Feb. 16 with special food offerings and activities, plus discounted admission.

Off-road nature tours start in February for guests to experience the valley’s back acreage, cultural sites and rare plants. This activity is conducted in partnership with North Shore EcoTours, and reservations can be made by calling 877-521-4453 or visiting northshoreeco-tours.com.

The Proud Peacock restaurant is scheduled to open in mid-March. For more information, call 638-7766.
