Hale Kula Elementary’s Michelle Colte is School Librarian of the Year, an inaugural 2014 award by School Library Journal and Scholastic Inc. As library media specialist at the techsavvy Schofield Barracks school, Michelle won $2,500 cash and $2,500 worth of materials of her choosing for her already-excellent programs. She “makes innovative use of technology and (fosters) exceptional community engagement,” they wrote. Plus, her computer coding lessons earned Hale Kula $10,000 to buy Chromebooks and tablets. A library, she says, “is about helping people make connections” …

Mililani’s Leona Soto and Waipio Gentry’s Celeste “Sally” Cheeseman are doing great at Century 21 Liberty Homes. In both June and July, Leona was its Top Listing Associate, and Celeste was Top Sales Associate. Mililani’s Ward Soto was TSA for April … Nene geese alighted near the flight line at Wheeler Aug. 14 and caused a flurry of excitement, reports Hawaii Army Weekly and biologist Kapua Kawelo. A rare sight on Oahu, all four had leg bands and one had a radio-tracking device.

Long story short: They flew here from Hawaii island, two nested at James Campbell wildlife refuge and hatched three chicks (two survived).

Wahiawa’s Zoe Sprott summered in Russia, in a dorm with her U.S. and Russian peers, and then with a host family via National Security Language Initiative for Youth. They also took a 13-hour train ride from Kirov to Moscow to tour the capital.
