Maunawili farmers Michele and Dean Wilhelm got the opportunity to compare their 7-acre Kapalai Farms with colleagues from throughout the world when they attended the Slow Food international fair and world summit last fall in Turin, Italy. All 800 chapters of Slow Food International, including the one on Oahu, actively support sustainable agriculture and small farms. “It’s as if we were all speaking the same language,” Dean explained to Ka Wai Ola, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs newspaper. Don’t fret about money, dear Congress, there’s help on the way: Sarah Chase (Kalaheo 2008, Chapman University 2012) has completed and passed four national CPA exams, and she’s working on earning her CPA license while employed at Deloitte & Touche in California … There he is in the January issue of Sunset magazine: Kaneohe kalo expert Daniel Anthony, pictured perched on a stone by a peaceful tropical stream as part of the national publication’s “Where the Locals Go,” a feature about Hawaii. (Daniel recommends the Leeward side in this issue, but we’ll forgive him for that) … Kailua jewelry designer Renee Eleu Rokero was in Beverly Hills last weekend to showcase her beautiful creations at a promotion honoring the Golden Globe awardees and presenters …

This Saturday’s hula fest at Polynesian Cultural Center (see Page 7) honors the park’s late kumu hula Aunty Sally Wood Naluai of Kahaluu. Her niece, Ellen Gay Dela Rosa, works at the center and recalls that Sally’s “love and passion for sharing the Hawaiian culture, especially hula, touched the hearts of many, not only in Hawaii, but throughout Polynesia, the Pacific and the world” …
