It’s been a good year so far for Sheena Alaiasa. After earning National Middle School Principal of the Year last summer for her work at King Intermediate, the Laie commuter was transferred to Castle High and then recently named permanent principal there. Counting all of her previous posts in Castle feeder schools, virtually all of Castle’s 1,551 students were in Sheena’s charge at either Heeia Elementary or King Intermediate at some point (so no secrets). She also met with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan during his March visit here …

Congratulations to Jacob Solomon for being Kalaheo High’s first state wrestling champion in 17 years (152-pound division) … Waimanalo’s Hawaii Job Corps Center students went all out on the 2014 food drive last month, presenting $1,676 to Hawaii Foodbank and delivering 500 pounds of food. “It makes them feel good to be able to give back to the agency that helped their families,” says JCC director Joann Espinosa
