District 50 Hawaii Lions recently hon- ored Rev. Bob Nakata as its 2012 Humanitarian of the Year. Currently the pastor of Kahaluu United Methodist Church and president of FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity), Bob’s had a long history of fighting for the little guy — from Waiahole-Waikane and H-3 struggles, to Kokua Kalihi Valley, the homeless, Turtle Bay expansion protests and Kahaluu’s anti-drug crusade. A former KEY Project executive director and state lawmaker, he’s now working for affordable housing and health care. At their state convention on Kauai, the Lions said “This humble and quiet man had great persistence and strength in his advocacy for the downtrodden, home- less and the poor.” (Adds Bob, quietly, of course: “Peacemakers may appear to be mild and gentle people, but they’re not.
