Sacred Hearts Academy senior Aina Katsikas is one of two Hawaii students picked for the U.S. Senate Youth Program, running March 7-14 in Washington, D.C. It comes with a $5,000 college scholarship and lots of networking and speeches. Aina also leads the SHA student council and has risen high in Girl Scouts. Honpa Hongwanji Mission honored six Living Treasures of Hawaii last month, half of them from East Oahu: Blossom Puanana Alama Tom, who danced and taught hula for 75 years and is the last surviving original judge of the Merrie Monarch festival; Haunani Apoliona, an award-winning musician and longtime OHA leader; and the late Paulette Nohealani Kahalepuna, a renowned feather lei maker and teacher of the art …
Already honored in the state, Jarrett Middle School seventh-grader Brycen Go received the Parent Heart Watch Heroes for Young Hearts Advocacy Champion award (youth) in January in Arizona. Brycen loves CPR, and he’s taught more than 10,000 people how to perform it in the two years since he learned it himself. In his free time, Brycen hangs out at the city’s Emergency Medical Services dispatch center, and he has his own manikin …
“All forms of dance are excellent exercises,” says Salome Sato, 78, a dancing veteran who now teaches line dance to seniors in Palolo (see Highlights), where it’s a full-on exercise regime. Kalani High alumna Mariah Victor, now a certified freshman Duck, recently won a grant from the local chapter of the UO alumni group via its Duane Cargill Memorial Scholarship fund.
