Waha Nui

Ahuimanu volleyball star Loxley Keala (Hi, Cuz!) has qualified for the 2012 High Performance Junior Beach Volleyball Championships July 19-21 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., after the Iolani junior and her partner Carly Kan triumphed at the Aloha Region tournament earlier this summer at Queen’s Sandbox. They also qualified for the USA Jr. Beach Championships July 28-30 in Milwaukee …

Drummer Martin H. Samuel waxed nostalgic after reading last year’s Islander story about a reunion party for Kailua bands. He wrote that he was in the Bright Eye Band, then Sweet Fire in Kailua with Pancho Graham, Cherie Harkins, Sue Pinkus and others. They played at Pinky’s and opened “the new Bully Hayes” in Pearl City. Now Martin designs video games …

Kaneohe’s Debra Tangonan is now vice president and Kaneohe branch manager for Central Pacific Bank, where she’s worked since 1976 … Kahaluu’s Jacob Lockwood, a recent homeschool graduate, was nominated by U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. She also nominated Kailua High’s Phillip Magliba to West Point, among others (who were mentioned previously) … Kailua sage Jane Campbell advises us all to “look up” on Sunday at 12:37 p.m. for another round of Lahaina Noon (casting no shadow) …

Also that day, Kailua’s Jim and Shannon Wood plan a potluck picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. at Magic Island to mark the 10th anniversary of Windward Ahupua’a Alliance. Come on down (223-4481) … Kailua native Bobby Silva Jr. is on a new career path in Hollywood as a casting producer for several TV shows (like Gordon Ramsey‘s Kitchen Nightmares). You never know what will happen next. In the middle of filming a NIKE commercial, his dad Bob Sr. tells me, they discovered the selected actor couldn’t drive stick shift, so Bobby hopped in to save the day (but no pay, ’cause he signed a waiver). Look for him driving an orange classic Camaro Super Sport across your TV screen soon …

Look for 24-VII alumnus Cole Horibe in the next So You Think You Can Dance. He made the top-20 cut
