Castle High graduate Teri Wright, now a second-year law student at UH, won the Best Advocate category with partner Tyler Gomes of Kailua at the 2012 Moot Court Competition Feb. 26 in Honolulu. The problem they argued was “Governor of Molokini, et al. v. Secretary of the Interior, et al.” a case with similarities to Hawaiian sovereignty issues. Tyler, who says his half-Portuguese heritage helps, also took first place as Best Oralist. The competition was sponsored by the national Native American Law Students Association and drew more than 50 teams from across the country …

Kaneohe’s Walter Jennings Fowler is one of 20 finalists for the Citizen Service Before Self award, which will be announced next Monday in Washington, D.C., by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. Walter and his wife were eating in a Honolulu sushi bar in December when an armed robber entered the eatery. Walter rose to the occasion and wrestled a long knife away from the bad guy, holding him until the police arrived. (The Fowlers then finished their meal.) HPD also gave the Hawaii Five-O prop master its top civilian award for valor Feb. 22 …

Kailua’s Joleen Iwaniec, 22, is the first Miss Latina Hawaii, crowned last month at the inaugural pageant in Honolulu. She also won the Congeniality award, a $10,000 Argosy University scholarship and more.
