Mililani High freshman Hunter Gentryshared first-place teen honors in the 2014 Hawaii Food and Wine Festival’s Keiki in the Kitchen competition. Hunter prepared tasty and healthy shrimp and vegetable wonton cups (baked, not fried). His dad Hugh says he’s been cooking since he was 2, and “It’s his passion.”

The prize for his efforts: two nights at Outrigger Reef Hotel and dinner for 10 at either Roy’s or Alan Wong’s … Yet another winner: Mililani Mauka third-grader Chloe Zentkovich won the “Maluhia Honua” poster design contest for Aloha Festivals 2014. Her depiction of Kamehameha on a canoe welcoming children from other countries became the official poster for the annual celebration. Chloe got a free ride in the floral parade and a $250 gift certificate from Royal Hawaiian Center. Mom Trisha says it’s her daughter’s third art contest win …

James Flynn (Mililani 2004) has graduated from Air National Guard basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, as have Dayton Gorospe-Neilsen (Leilehua 2013), Lyle Warren-Huddy (Mililani 2012) and Mililani’s Dustin Long … Trojan Sarah Hood, an active Leo Club member, was awarded a $500 scholarship by the Friends of Mililani Public Library … Wahiawa’s Kainoa Bryant won a $1,000 scholarship from Safeway Hawaii Foundation (his second grant), which he’ll use at UH Manoa … North Shore marketing ace Jennifer Crowe-Lopez has joined Servco Pacific Inc. to manage marketing for three divisions (appliances, overhead doors and cars) …

Mutual Publishing (mutualpublishing.com) has released A Pocket Guide to Pearl Harbor and Ford Island Historic Military Sites, and it makes sense that Meloni Courtway is the coauthor. A Mililani freelance writer, she’s a Coast Guard wife who has retired Navy sailors in the family, too. Meloni says she’s inspired by the heroic stories found there …

North Shore’s Vance Farrant reports progress on the Pupukea edible bike path after the Sept. 28 work party, but “We’re still looking for people in the Sunset Beach area who can water plants and do some maintenance.” The path runs from Three Tables to O’opuola Street.
