Thirty years ago, two young musicians made their first recording together at Sounds of Hawaii Studios on Young Street. Tom Boyd, the brilliant Honolulu Symphony oboe player, and an unknown local musician named Audy Kimura … the song was Lovers & Friends, which became a No. 1 hit in Hawaii that year. Tom, now a sought-after session musician working with the likes of Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Lionel Richie and Alicia Keyes, and on movies such as Titanic and Disney’s Aladdin, recently sat in at Audy’s “home in Waikiki,” Hy’s Steak House, where they performed the song together again. This week in 1969: The Society of Seven makes its dynamic debut in the main showroom of the Outrigger Hotel in Waikiki for seven weeks during Tommy Sands‘ vacation. A reviewer says their elaborate music often sounds like a whole brass band, with singers bursting with energy!
