This week in 1964: The Beatles‘ first U.S. concert on Feb. 11, 1964, at the Washington Coliseum in Washington, D.C., is shown via delayed closed-circuit television at Waikiki Shell. The 8,000 on hand scream and applaud as The Beatles perform From Me To You, I Saw Her Standing There, All My Loving, Please Please Me, She Loves You, Twist And Shout, I Want To Hold Your Hand and more. During the first half of the evening, film footage of the Beach Boys and Lesley Gore in separate concerts is shown. Tickets cost $2 at the Shell … and cost $5 to see the live show in Washington. Fun fact: A few days earlier, Ringo Starr ruminated on the concert when I interviewed him at Honolulu Airport during his brief stopover en route to join John, Paul and George for their tour of Australia … and the No. 1 record in Hawaii is Chapel of Love by The Dixie Cups
