Overall, what did you think? I expected more from this movie based on the Victorian period and its complexities. Most of the characters were not very developed. The women were superficial, and they lacked the human quality I look for in films. I think more focus was on the plot, so the character development was neglected.

This film lacks depth, although it doesn’t mean it wasn’t entertaining. I love the Victorian period.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes? Fighting scenes are always great because they bring a climax with a wonderful score.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film? Probably .

What did you think of the cinematography? The cinematography along with the costumes were the best aspects of the movie. Seeing the traditional old trains and boats brings you back in time, which is one reason I enjoyed this movie.

Was the message/theme clear? In many ways, the theme of avarice, which is a recurring theme for most films in this style, is one lesson we can learn from: to be true to ourselves and good to others. As Geoffrey Chaucer wrote in the Canterbury Tales, which remains true to this day, “Avarice is the root of all evil.” It is the beginning of sin and the deadliest of the seven deadly sins.

Did it remind you of any other works of film? Indiana Jones and the Harry Potter films come to mind. But more so, it reminded me a lot of Young Sherlock Holmes (the ’80s version), but not as polished. Just like in Young Sherlock Holmes, there is a hero, a protagonist, a villain, and a dark and sinister underground society on a quest to conquer the world.

To whom would you recommend this movie? I would recommend it to older teens and young adults who love cosplay, goth sub-culture, Victorian literature, costumes, steam punk, England and adventure.

Did any of the actors stand out? Will Charity in costume, with his beautiful Victorian suits and ties, his mannerism and cunning disguises.

Did you identify with any of the characters? I can identify most with Will Charity, played by Michael

Sheen, for his dark character appeal and, as his name describes, his very giving nature and desire to want to save the world in order to help others, which is the opposite of the villain in the movie. Charity also has another side: his magician alter ego.

What’s your favorite movie snack? I’m a traditional moviegoer. I always need to have my large butter popcorn with mochi crunch, hot dog and a fruit punch.

On a different note, what’s new with you? I spin every Wednesday night at Downbeat Diner and Lounge with DJs G-Spot and CoonDog, and there is no cover. On the last Saturday of each month, I spin with other DJs at Bar 35. This month’s theme, for Jan. 25, is the The Roaring ’20s, so come dressed to impress.
