African-American gospels and spirituals will fill the air as Windward Choral Society presents “The Storm is Passing Over” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St. John Vianney Parish on Keolu Drive.

As artistic director Susan McCreary Duprey explained, the choral society has wanted to showcase this genre of music for some time and decided to correlate it with African American History Month. (The celebration normally takes place during February, but the group’s accompanist was off-island throughout the month.)

Accompanied by Grant Mack and Briggs Christie, the free concert will offer selections such as Steal Away, Praise His Holy Name and Balm in Gilead. Guests are welcome to join in and sing along, and special guest Leon Williams will share songs from his heritage in a rich baritone voice. A freewill offering is welcome to cover performance costs.
