Safeway Invests In The Community

CLAYTON ETO
Safeway Hawai‘i district manager

For 58 years, Safeway has been proudly serving Hawai‘i. Today, the company operates 23 stores on Hawai‘i Island, O‘ahu, Kaua‘i and Maui. In December 2020, we opened our newest location on the Big Island in the heart of Kona at 75-971 Henry St. The 63,000-square-foot store offers a variety of fresh offerings, local products and prepared foods. The new store’s footprint is 25 percent larger than the former Kona Safeway.

On O‘ahu, we’re excited to be in the process of a major remodel at the Hawai‘i Kai Safeway and store enhancements at three other locations in Honolulu, Kāne‘ohe and Kapolei. The highly upgraded Hawai‘i Kai location will feature an expanded deli, produce and wine selections, a fresh seafood and poke section, enhanced ready-to-serve options and a full-service butcher block. We expect the transformation to be completed later this spring.

The Safeway team at the Līhu‘e store, led by store director Lesah Merritt, presents Hawai’i Foodbank – Kaua‘i Branch with a food donation from Safeway’s Nourishing Neighbors hunger relief program.

Safeway is a union-represented employer with more than 2,500 associates across the state. We deeply appreciate all that our associates are doing during this unprecedented time. With the support of our team, we continue to make investments in and expand our capabilities in e-commerce to provide value to our customers. Drive Up and Go pickup service allows you to place your grocery orders online, schedule a pickup time and a Safeway associate will put the groceries directly into your car. We expanded our Drive Up and Go service to a dozen stores in Hawai‘i.

We take great pride in giving back to the communities we serve. In 2020, Safeway donated over $10 million in gift cards and financial support to charitable organizations, helping to feed local families impacted by the current crisis in Northern California, Nevada and Hawai‘i. Some of the local nonprofit recipients include The Food Basket of Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i Appleseed and Maui Food Bank. These donations were made possible by the Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors program to support local hunger relief efforts.
