Report Out On Waikane Bombs

The draft of the Final Remedial Investigation Report on the former Waikane warfare training area is now available for review online and at Kaneohe Library and at KEY Project on Waihee Road in Kahaluu.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks comment from the public by April 30 on the draft. A feasibility study, meanwhile, is being conducted at the former World War II site to determine what kinds of cleanup actions are needed to reduce the risks from old munitions and explosives.

The area was used for advanced training in offensive warfare and air-to-ground practice bombings.

Two related meetings are planned on the subject as well, this week and next, both in the Waiahole Elementary School cafeteria:

* The Marine Corps’ Waikane Valley Impact Area Restoration Advisory Board meets to discuss the cleanup at 7 tonight (April 18). * The Army Corps of Engineers’ Waikane Training Area Restoration Advisory Board meets to discuss remedial investigation at 7 p.m. April 25.
