Record Store Heading To Town

The Hungry Ear won’t be listening in Kailua after this Saturday, when the music store’s 35-year residence on Kuulei Road ends.

Owner Ward Yamashita cites “ever-rising rents, as well as the changing profile of Kailua” that compel him to make the move. His new store will have a soft opening Aug. 1 at University Square, at the corner of University and King.

“We investigated every available storefront on the Windward side,” Yamashita explained, “and we came to the conclusion that, amazingly, rent prices in

Honolulu have become more reasonable than prices in Kailua.”

The business, known for its local, reggae and classic rock CDs and vinyl albums and phonographs (record players to younger folks), is conducting a “Moving to Town” sale through Saturday, with 30 percent off on all regularly priced items.
