There’s a lot to like about this year’s Kapolei team. The Hurricanes have a strong running game and a huge offensive line led by Pesi Savea (6-ft.-8, 310 pounds) and Villiamu Auwae (6-ft.-6, 275), who just got an offer from Utah State. Yes, Kahuku is big — but Kapolei is bigger. Also, while Kahuku Coach Lee Leslie could do great things in Kahuku, he’s still new to Hawaii. The coaching edge for this game goes to the more Hawaii-experienced Darren Hernandez. Kapolei will score the upset.

You’re wrong again, Chris. Coach Leslie feels he’s ready for the task. He’s going to open up the Red Raider offense, which has always featured a power running game sprinkled in with the occasional pass. This year, expect to see some rollouts, spread and play-action passing by quarterback Tuli-Wily Matagi. Kahuku has the weapons to put up a lot of points. Beating Kapolei won’t be easy. But I see Kahuku using their new passing attack to get an early lead, then using their running game to move the chains and wind down the clock for a big early-season W.
