During the second annual Ready 2 React emergency preparedness event July 26 at Pearlridge Center, Herbert Pang, who has come to be known as the “mayor” of the shopping center, was honored for his own efforts to keep fellow customers safe.

Now 83, he has been visiting Pearlridge on an almost-daily basis since retiring from his sales job 15 years ago. He and wife Jane, 81, enjoy going there to walk the mall for exercise, drink coffee and socialize with friends.

While they’re there, Herbert assists patrons when they have questions. He also has helped Pearlridge to keep everything in working order by informing management when things need repair.

For his constant presence, Pearlridge general manager Fred Paine dubbed Herbert the “mayor of Pearlridge.”

Pearlridge Center, City Councilman Breene Harimoto and other state representatives recognized Herbert for his service at the event.

“Pearlridge Center management welcomes and appreciates Herbert’s help in notifying them of potential problems and issues with facilities because the safety and comfort of guests are of paramount importance,” Harimoto explained in a written statement recognizing Herbert.
