105 Years Of Karate Japanese Cultural Center Of Hawaii, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., free. The Hawaii Karate Roots exhibit celebrates its grand opening this weekend complete with karate demonstrations and the chance to view the history of karate in Hawaii through photos, weapons, rare books and artifacts. Bill Roberts Exhibit Haleiwa Art Gallery, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Inspired by local petroglyphs, these block prints capture the essense of old Hawaii with an ethnic appeal. This exhibit is open through Aug. 20. (637-3366)
Conversations With The Moon Bibelot Gallery, 1130 Koko Head Ave., Suite two, Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. “Conversations with the moon” features paintings by artists Haunani Bush. The exhibit continues through Sept. 9. (738-0368)
Exhibit Explores The World Of Fishing The Exhibit Space, 1132 Bishop Street, second level lobby, Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-2 p.m. “The Lure Of Fishing” features art and photos examining the history of fishing in Hawaii, great living fishermen, equipment and conservation of Hawaii fishing. Honolulu Academy of Arts 900 S. Beretania St., Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., $12 general includes audio tour, $7 entrance only, $5 audio tour. Experience the Academy in audio! Enjoy a lively informative tour of the Academy’s art and historic architecture. The self-guided audio tour allows you to proceed through the galleries in any order and at your own pace. Slam Poetry Competition Hawaiian Nut, at Ala Moana Hotel, ground level, 7:45 p.m., $3 before 8:30 p.m.; $5 after 8:30 p.m. Top poets compete in this themed slam poetry competition. The Winner takes home two round trip tickets to a neighbor island. The event also features some of Hawaii’s best DJs, live painters and musicians.
