New Vice Chancellor On Board At UHWO

University of Hawaii-West Oahu recently named Lui K. Hokoana its vice chancellor for student affairs. Prior to joining UHWO, Hokoana was the associate

vice president for student affairs in the University of Hawaii system, where he was responsible for developing and coordinating student programs. In his new position, he will lead such programs as enrollment management, admissions, outreach, academic program advising, student orientation, cultural advising, health and wellness, first-year experience and career development. He also will oversee the department’s budget and other resources.

“Lui comes to UH West Oahu with a wealth of student affairs experience at the University of Hawaii System and other UH campuses,” stated UHWO chancellor Rockne Freitas. “He puts students first and is a true advocate for the student experience at the university.”

Hokoana joined UH in 1991, starting as a counselor at Maui Community College before becoming vice chancellor of student affairs at Windward Community College. He is credited with developing a scholarship program and the Achieving the Dream initiative, which provided growth in enrollment and financial aid access.

He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from UH Hilo, a master’s degree in communications from UH Manoa and a doctoral degree in education from University of Southern California.

“I am excited to be a part of an administration team committed to creating a student-centered learning environment for the students at UHWO,” Hokoana stated.
