Maunalua’s Gala Aug. 13

While caring for the land and sea, Malama Maunalua also intends to nurture humans from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 13 at Koko Marina Center where “Dine-Around” guests come to Kona Brewing Co., Assaggio’s Ristorante and Greek Marina.

The event includes a walking tour of healthy watershed demonstration sites installed around the center, displaying ways homeowners and businesses can reduce erosion and polluted water runoff on their property. Grate filters (to the marina waters) and small rain and xeriscape gardens are now a part of Koko Marina’s shopping environment.

Admission is $75. RSVP by Aug. 5 to ana@rmgpacific.com.

As a nonprofit stewardship group, Malama Maunalua has been busy lately installing and promoting their watershed models, which also includes a large rain garden complex at Koko Head District Park. Wailupe and Kuliouou beach parks also have rain gardens.

A blessing of its Mauka to Makai Healthy Watershed projects drew 300 to the shopping center parking lot in June, where folks hauled off native plants and tons of mulch, learned about invasive algae, swept away 300 pounds of eroded dirt and debris and enjoyed music by a band of environmentalists.
