Makapu‘u Trail Access Reduced For Repairs

East Oahu hikers should take note of construction at Makapu‘u lighthouse trail through July.

The $2.7 million renovation, which began in early February, looks to repave the trail, reconstruct broken rock walls, replace metal culverts and install four new lookout spots, as well as conduct other maintenance work on the well-used hiking spot.

Trail closure dates are March 2-5, with tentative dates also set for July 20-24 and 27-28.

Starting next week, one side of the trail will once again be open to the public on weekdays, but hikers should note that there may be delays while machinery is moved, and to exercise extra caution during this time. There is no construction work on weekends.

Neither Makapu‘u Lookout along Kalanianaole Highway nor the Ka‘iwi shoreline will be affected by the work, but during park closures, guests will have to enter those areas via the Sandy Beach end of the park, as the trail parking lot also will be closed.

Regular park hours are 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., extending to 7:45 p.m. after April 1.
