Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle is seeing to it that the future will have educated people to carry on its legacy of keeping Hawaii clean, green and beautiful.

Members recently presented Windward Community College with a $6,000 check to cover its scholarship awards to students for the 2013-2014 school year. The fund supports deserving students who are pursuing courses in the college’s agriculture and environmental studies programs on the Kaneohe campus. The group has given a total of $7,000 to environmental studies since 2010, and $21,000 to agriculture since 1993.

“Our members enjoy meeting ‘our’ students and hope to help many more Windward CC students in the future,” said LKOC president Lyn Turner. One such student, David Medina of the Philippines, attended the group’s December luncheon at Mid Pacific Country Club and spoke of the new skills and knowledge he is acquiring. Medina told guests he hopes to be a role model for fellow farmers when he returns home.

“We have many students struggling to pay for tuition, books and fees,” added chancellor Doug Dykstra, “so every scholarship gift is critically important to both students’ success and persistence.”
